Welcome to Year 2

In Bluebells Class the teachers are Mrs Powell & Mrs Sayles and the Learning Support Assistant is Mrs Kelly, and Mrs Denton. Mrs Denard will support Year 1 and Year 2 class where needed.

In Daffodils Class the teacher is Mrs Bowyer and the Learning Support Assistants are Mrs Lewis & Mrs Ledgerwood.

In Year 2  we continue to build upon the skills that the children have learned in Nursery, Reception and Year 1 by providing a broad and balanced curriculum, which we design carefully to motivate and engage the children. Topics such as ‘Wolves’, ‘Rainforests’, ‘Roald Dahl’, ‘The Great Fire of London’ and ‘Our Wonderful World’ link together English, Maths, Geography, History, Art and other subjects in engaging and relevant ways and the children have lots of fun learning new things through as many hands-on activities as possible.

Please see the links for our topic webs and end of year learning expectations.

Throughout the year we organise many visitors or school trips to enrich our topics. In recent years our visitors have included the Hampshire Fire Service, a Great Fire of London storyteller and a weaver. This March, to celebrate Book Week, we had an amazing visit from the children’s author and illustrator, M.P Robertson. It was a very ‘dragony’ experience!  We also went on a coach trip to a Barnaby Bear singing experience at the Anvil in Basingstoke and are visiting Hillier Gardens in the summer term. We like to keep busy!

In Year 2 our children have weekly music lessons provided by Hampshire Music Service. They spend a term learning how to play the recorder, drums and ukulele and even perform a concert to their parents at the end of each term to show off their musical skills!

Our Year 2 children are the oldest in the school so we love to give them responsibilities to prepare them for junior school and develop their self-confidence and independence. In Year 2 your child may help to lead the School Council or be asked to become a Lunchtime Monitor; and we often arrange times when they can read to and play with the younger children in our school. As a Lunchtime Monitor, the children help our lunch time supervisors and support our Reception children when they eat lunch, as well as look after children on the playground if they need a friend or get hurt.

For any further information about Year 2, please do contact the Year 2 team on year2@parsonagefarm.hants.sch.uk.

Useful information:

  • We encourage the children to come in to the classroom in the mornings by themselves, so that they can take responsibility for putting their things away and start the day in a calm and settled classroom.
  • In Year 2 the children can change their reading books whenever they need a new one. We encourage them to choose books from the appropriate boxes independently, but we do help them when necessary! We would like the children to read at home at least 5 times a week.
  • We have PE on Tuesdays and Fridays, so please send your child in to school wearing their PE kits on these days and make sure that earrings are taken out.
