Sunflowers Class and Tulips Class Year 1

In Sunflowers Class the teacher is Mrs Harper and the Learning Support Assistants are Mrs Haffenden.

In Tulips Class the teacher is Miss Spiller and the Learning Support Assistants are Mrs Jasper, Mrs McClure and Mrs Denard will support Year 1 & 2 across all classes.

In Year 1 we aim to make the transition from the Early Years to Key Stage 1 as smooth as possible so that the children feel safe, confident and ready to build upon their learning from Nursery and Reception. We design our curriculum so that it is purposeful and fun, with topics such as ‘It’s out of this World’ and ‘Amazing Animals’ to engage and motivate the children.

We aim to provide as many hands-on learning activities as possible and encourage the children to develop independence, resilience and a love for learning as well as developing their knowledge and understanding across the curriculum. Throughout the year we organise many visitors and school outings to enrich our topics. Recently our visitors have included the children’s author and illustrator, M.P Robertson; a new local author, Mary Grice; and an Internet Safety Expert, Paul Hay. This year we have also taken our classes on a walk to the local park as part of their Geography learning, during which the children used their map-reading skills; and in the summer Year 1 will have a school trip further afield. In past years we have visited the Lookout Centre in Bracknell…. so watch this space!

In Year 1 our children have weekly music lessons provided by Hampshire Music Service, during which they learn to sing, use body percussion and play some percussion instruments.

Please see the links for our topic webs and end of year learning expectations, as well as other useful documents.

Useful information:

  • In Year 1, the children can change their reading books whenever they need a new one. We encourage them to choose books from the appropriate boxes independently, but we will support them in making the right choices! We would like the children to read at home at least 5 times a week.

We have PE on Mondays and Tuesdays, so please send your child in to school wearing their kits on these days – and make sure that earrings are taken out for safety reasons!
